- Combine mechanical design know-how with practical manufacturing experience
About the Company
Tectonus was born out of university research, founded on a unique approach to seismic protection. What began as deep technical innovation has matured into a proven, real-world solution, now protecting buildings in some of the world’s most seismically active regions.
The company is now in a scale-up phase and expanding globally, with current projects being delivered across hospitals, schools, and other critical buildings. The team has just grown into new premises - significantly expanding its manufacturing capability and capacity. This marks a shift from early-stage innovation to building repeatable, high-quality solutions at scale - without losing the technical rigour that underpins the product.
Culturally, Tectonus sits at the intersection of deep engineering expertise and a growing manufacturing mindset. It’s a highly technical environment, grounded in structural and mechanical engineering excellence, but one that values end-to-end thinking- from design through to manufacture, delivery, and real-world performance. Roles here require the ability to see the full picture: championing manufacturability while staying true to the engineering principles that make the technology world-class.
Your role
The purpose of this role is to be the manufacturing champion, ensuring product designs move from concept to scalable production in a way that balances cost, quality, time, and client and supplier relationships - without compromising technical performance.
There are two core focus areas:
Product Development & Engineering
- Work cross-functionally to evaluate technical ideas and develop robust mechanical concepts
- Produce detailed mechanical designs and CAD drawings
- Build and iterate prototypes, source materials, and support the transition from design to production
- Maintain clear engineering documentation and design records to support repeatability and scale
- Plan and carry out mechanical testing to validate performance of seismic devices
- Evaluate new materials, manufacturing methods, and design changes
- Review existing designs and drive improvements based on test outcomes
- Support quality and compliance by feeding test data back into design and production decisions
To be successful in this role you’ll bring mechanical design expertise, a strong manufacturing understanding, and a genuinely collaborative way of working. You’re someone who enjoys taking a design from idea through to real-world production and using each project as a chance to learn and improve. You will have:
- 5+ years’ experience applying Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles
- Hands-on experience across product development, prototyping, and manufacturing environments
- Tertiary-qualified in Mechanical Engineering
- Strong, practical experience using CAD to produce detailed, production-ready designs
- A cross-functional thinker who collaborates easily across mechanical, structural, manufacturing, and production teams
- Open-minded and inclusive in your approach - welcoming ideas, feedback, and challenge
- Disciplined and process-aware, with sound judgement around what matters most
- A genuine team player who values shared outcomes over individual wins
- Highly curious, with a growth mindset and a strong drive for continuous improvement
- Motivated to learn from testing, feedback, and delivery - using every project to make the product, process, and yourself better
This is a rare opportunity to join a high-growth business at an exciting stage of expansion. If you’re passionate about manufacturing, design, and product development, you’ll love being at the intersection of all three.
You’ll work with innovative technology, contribute to new product designs, support international expansion, and see your work delivered through manufacturing here in New Zealand. The projects are challenging, varied, and genuinely rewarding - a place to stretch your skills and grow.
If you’re curious, eager to learn, and open to new ideas, we’d love to hear from you.
