Ready to build email security systems that protect users at massive scale?

Join SMX's Email Security Operations Center (eSOC) as our first dedicated Security Software Engineer, where you'll transform prototype threat detection systems into enterprise-grade security platforms.

Your code will directly impact how quickly we detect phishing campaigns, neutralise spam operations, and protect user accounts from compromise across our email platform.

This isn't traditional software development – you'll be engineering tactical solutions that stop active threats in their tracks, then evolving those rapid fixes into scalable strategic systems. Working alongside security analysts in our 24/7 operations center, you'll build automation and intelligence systems designed to keep millions of email users safe from increasingly sophisticated threats. Think fast-paced, real-world threats, and code that matters from day one.

With strong growth potential for both the eSOC product and your career, you’ll be part of building a flagship solution from the ground up within the SMX portfolio.

The Role:

This newly created position places you at the forefront of SMX’s security operations, bringing dedicated engineering expertise into the Email Security Operations Centre for the first time. You'll be instrumental in scaling our security platform from prototype to production, directly contributing to the protection of hundreds of thousands of email users.

The eSOC operates 24/7 to defend against spam, phishing, and account compromise attacks. The team combines real-time investigation with internally built automation systems to detect and respond to incidents as they happen. These systems are ready for the next phase of evolution – and that’s where you come in.

In this role, you’ll support the eSOC Operations Manager to mature these critical systems, enabling faster, more effective threat response and contributing to the ongoing development of SMX’s security platform.

You’ll collaborate closely with security analysts, engineers, and other stakeholders to deliver outcomes aligned with SMX’s mission: making a positive impact on the digital world by securing it for the benefit of everyone.

This will see you :
  • Support Tactical Threat Response: Develop rapid countermeasures to active security incidents – building quick fixes and workarounds that stop threats in progress, then iterating toward permanent solutions.
  • Build and Scale Automation Systems:  Integrate those tactical responses into our strategic automation platforms to prevent similar threats from reoccurring, reducing manual work and improving response times.

  • Evolve the Security Event System: Develop and extend the new Security Event System, implementing intelligent event triage and response, and building analyst workflows that scale with the growing threat landscape. There is an opportunity here to develop LLM security integrations.

  • Streamline Tooling and Integrations: Streamline and integrate eSOC’s tech stack, identifying opportunities to connect tools and systems for greater efficiency and alignment with the broader SMX product portfolio.

  • Provide Technical Leadership and Mentorship:  Act as a senior technical lead, supporting eSOC staff, handling escalations, and contributing to complex threat analysis and problem-solving.

  • Turn Operational Challenges into Scalable Solutions:  Collaborate cross-functionally across the business, translating operational challenges into technical improvements that elevate the maturity of SMX’s security operations.

About you:
You’re a curious, motivated problem-solver with a figure-it-out mindset. You might come from a traditional software engineering background, or perhaps you’re an experienced security engineer with excellent programming skills - either way, you bring the technical depth and initiative needed to navigate complex environments.

You’ve worked with legacy tools and processes and with hands-on experience in scripting, automation, and tooling development. A strong collaborator, you communicate effectively with cross-functional teams to drive improvement and build smarter systems.

Essentially, you’re someone who takes ownership, gets things done, and constantly looks for better ways to do things.

SMX is a remote workforce; strong communication skills, especially written, are key.
You will thrive in this role if you:
  • Have experience writing software using Go (our primary language in eSOC)
  • Have experience using SQL databases (PostgreSQL, Clickhouse) for data analytics.
  • Pride yourself in building a deep technical understanding of the products and systems you are responsible for.
  • Feel a sense of responsibility to the customer, to deliver meaningful security outcomes for them.
  • Have an interest in security issues affecting email (spam, phishing, spoofing) and how to combat them.
  • Have experience developing security software or automations.
  • Have experience with SIEM platforms like Splunk, Sentinel, or InsightIDR.
  • Take pride in producing high-quality documentation.
  • Communicate effectively through writing.
